Healthy Environment - Earth Valley

Climate change is real. Weather patterns are changing fast, the temperature of our oceans is rising. The consequences are devastating. Droughts, famines, forest fires, forced migration have become commonplace everywhere in the world. In the face of climate change, pivoting towards a green future is imperative.

Healthy and sustainable environment

Let’s zoom in on The Netherlands, one of the densest populated countries in the world. How can we make room for a growing population, mostly living in urban areas and while simultaneously reducing the stress on our planet? In practice, this means that we have to tackle housing, mobility, and energy issues all at the same time. Addressing these interconnected issues requires the use of (geo)data, digital twins, ICT, and artificial intelligence for public participation, decision-making, and implementation. The region’s focus on data technology is crucial for addressing spatial and social challenges. We use the power of AI to foster a healthy urban environment. Field labs and real-life analytics play a vital role in this effort, with leading companies like Royal HaskoningDHV, Arcadis, Royal BAM Group, Sweco and Ballast Nedam leading the way in digital innovation within the built environment.

In the heart of The Netherlands, Utrecht Region is leading the charge with its pioneering initiatives in smart sustainability. In Utrecht Region’s ‘Earth Valley,’ leading firms in geo-data, water management, sustainable construction, and environmental protection collaborate with top universities and research institutes, backed by strong government support. By integrating research, innovation, and talent development, we unlock insights from critical data, accelerate advancements, and shape a better future.

As grid congestion presents a significant challenge, Utrecht is leading the development of smart energy systems and e-hubs. Did you know that this region is a pioneer in developing bidirectional charging? Balancing energy demand and supply is critical, and our region is proactively seeking (foreign) solutions through smart energy grids and renewable energy integration. This collaborative effort aligns with national priorities for smart and sustainable housing, powered by data-driven innovations. Circular construction, extensive renovations, and efficient energy connections are key areas where Utrecht Region excels.

Utrecht’s strategic central location acts as a catalyst for pioneering mobility concepts. As major highways and railroads converge here, the region is a fertile ground for electric and hydrogen-powered last-mile delivery solutions. Our world-renowned cycling infrastructure, recognized globally by the World Economic Forum, underscores our dedication to sustainable urban mobility. With the highest bike ownership per capita and a vibrant bike-related business ecosystem, Utrecht promotes cycling for its economic, social, and health benefits, driving forward innovative urban living solutions.

Examples:

DigiC

One good example of our commitment to a sustainable built environment is DigiC (Digitalization in the Circular Construction Economy), an innovation program dedicated to advancing digitalization in the circular construction. As part of the ROM Utrecht Region, DigiC fosters innovation, public-private partnerships, and knowledge sharing. Its focus areas include factory-based construction, material digitalization, and smart construction logistics. DigiC accelerates the transition to circular construction in the Netherlands trough concrete innovation projects. A standout project is the Area-Specific Material Passport for the Merwede district development in the city of Utrecht. This project contributes to a circular construction by extending material lifespan and reducing the need for new raw materials. By accurately documenting materials in a passport, we significantly boost their potential reuse and market value.

Utrecht Bike Community

Cycling is deeply ingrained in the Dutch DNA. Our enterprising region actively supports bike related businesses driving economic growth, social inclusion, and public health. The Utrecht Bike Community is a professional network that unites bike manufacturer, mechanics, insurance companies and policymakers. It also serves as a welcoming hub for newcomers to the region. Key initiatives include the Utrecht Bike Ecosystem, with features design sessions connecting connecting over 20 companies in the region focused on improving bike mobility, infrastructure, and safety. This expanding network is dedicated to knowledge-sharing and community engagement.

First Bidirectional Region in the World

The Utrecht region is a leader in bidirectional charging (V2G technology) thanks to innovative projects, strategic partnerships, and sustainable policies. The city hosts one of the world's first large-scale V2G networks, allowing electric vehicles to both charge and return energy to the grid, balancing energy demand and integrating renewables. Collaboration between local government, Utrecht University, and companies like We Drive Solar has driven this success. V2G plays a key role in Utrecht's goal of becoming carbon-neutral by 2050, enhancing solar energy use through projects like Smart Solar Charging. With V2G integrated into urban planning, Utrecht sets a scalable example for other regions.
