Expanding to Europe: A Strategic Move

CityFi‘s journey to Europe was driven by its ambition to address urban challenges on a global scale, particularly in the realm of sustainable mobility and public space management. Recognizing the significance of Europe as a hub for advanced urban planning, the company sought to build a presence in an environment that prioritizes innovative city solutions. “We saw Europe as the next logical step in our mission to create cities that are more livable, sustainable, and accessible,” said Evan Costagliola, Senior Principal at CityFi.

For CityFi, the ideal location for its European office needed to embody a commitment to urban planning, sustainability, and a strong foundation for public-private collaboration. Costagliola (pictured on the right) emphasized, “We were searching for a city that not only supports sustainable urban development but also demonstrates best practices in mobility and smart city solutions.”

Why Utrecht?

After assessing various potential locations in Europe, CityFi chose Utrecht as the base for its European operations. Utrecht is renowned for its forward-thinking urban design, sustainable policies, and a well-established ecosystem for innovation. Costagliola explained, “Utrecht’s strong reputation as a center of urban planning and innovation made it the perfect location for us to establish our European operations.”

The city’s approach to urban planning aligns closely with CityFi’s core values. Utrecht is home to innovative projects such as car-free city centers, extensive bike lanes, and smart mobility initiatives. This environment allows CityFi to engage with urban development projects directly related to sustainable mobility and civic innovation. Costagliola further highlighted, “Utrecht serves as a best practice model for cities around the world, and we’re thrilled to contribute to this pioneering environment.”

The choice of Utrecht also opens doors for CityFi to collaborate with local entities, from startups to municipalities and corporations, creating a robust network of partnerships. Utrecht’s strategic location in Europe, coupled with its thriving innovation ecosystem, offers CityFi a unique platform to scale its efforts in the global market.

Support from ROM Utrecht Region

The expansion of CityFi to Utrecht was significantly facilitated by the Netherlands Foreign Investment Agency and ROM Utrecht Region, which played an active role in supporting the company’s transition into the Dutch market. ROM Utrecht Region provided CityFi with crucial connections, resources, and insights into the local ecosystem. This assistance enabled CityFi to integrate smoothly and establish a solid foundation for their operations.

The involvement of ROM Utrecht Region extended beyond logistical support. They introduced CityFi to the Earth Valley initiative, a regional cluster focused on sustainability and smart cities, aligning well with CityFi’s mission. “ROM Utrecht Region connected us with key stakeholders, answered our questions, and provided the support we needed to make this transition as smooth as possible,” Costagliola noted.

With ROM Utrecht Region’s guidance, CityFi has also engaged in dialogues that may facilitate the global expansion of Dutch startups, leveraging CityFi’s connections within the U.S. market. This mutually beneficial relationship highlights the strength of Utrecht’s ecosystem and its capacity to foster international growth.

Paving the Way for Sustainable Urban Solutions

CityFi’s establishment in Utrecht underscores the city’s standing as a European hub for innovation and urban sustainability. Through this expansion, CityFi aims to contribute to regional and international dialogues on sustainable mobility, urban resilience, and civic engagement. The company’s commitment to fostering public-private partnerships and pilot projects aligns seamlessly with Utrecht’s forward-looking urban agenda.

In alignment with its growth strategy, CityFi is already working on various projects aimed at enhancing urban livability in Utrecht and beyond. The consultancy will bring its expertise in policy design and urban innovation to collaborate with local stakeholders, supporting Utrecht’s position as a pioneer in sustainable urban development.

As CityFi builds its European presence, the company will continue to act as a bridge between the U.S. and European markets, enabling cross-continental knowledge exchange and collaboration. For other companies considering European expansion, CityFi’s success in Utrecht serves as a testament to the city’s vibrant innovation ecosystem and strategic role in advancing sustainable solutions on a global scale.
